Beauty Breakdown: The Cat Eye
Doing a “cat eye” or ” winged eye liner” on yourself can be quite challenging… Below I have listed the 4 simple steps on how to do this. For Whitney’s look last weekend she wanted a clean lid, and a berry stained lip which are great additions to the bold statement of a black liquid line.
How to Achieve a Cat Eye in 4 Simple Steps
1. Prep your lid: Apply desired base and shadow to create a clean surface to work on. I used Urban Decay Primer Potion and set it with a light swipe of Nylon Shadow by Mac. This look also looks beautiful with a really clean lid in which case you would just use primer and set with loose powder.
2. Draw the line: I used a Mac 263 angle brush, slightly damp with Bali by Nars to make the first line. I like using a dark brown matte shadow. On Whitney’s eye I chose to start on the inner eye leaving a little space clean. Using small strokes I drew the desired line and made sure we liked it as this was going to be traced by a permanent liquid. This is a great way to gauge how far to take the wing at the end and easily change it with a Qtip. Everyone one has a different eye shape so you need to look in the mirror and turn your head to see if you like where the wing is. Don’t pull it too far out or up, if you follow the natural shape of your eye it will look effortless. You can also use a triangle sponge dipped in pressed/loose powder to guide you as a straight edge and then brush away powder when you are done. (Press it onto the skin before you start angled from the bottom lash line, parallel to your cheekbone. This is also a great trick when using a lot of dark shadows especially concentrated in the outer corner the eye).
3. Apply Mascara: Get that mascara on!!! This will not only allow you to see the end result but if you need to change anything about the line you drew you can do it now. With mascara on, your eye opens up and takes on its shape. Maybe you want to add more wing, or make it a little thicker or thinner. You can always add another coat after the liquid liner as well. We used waterproof because it was a wedding but normally Whitney loves regular mascara. TryL’oreal Voluminous (my go to waterproof) I also love the Hourglass Film Noir Full Spectrum Mascara.
4. Liquid Liner: For this look I used the Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner Pen in Black, it really doesn’t move and I love the shape of the tip. It is so easy to apply on myself and clients. You can use any liquid liner you feel comfortable with. By having your mascara on already, it is easier to glide the pen over the shadow line you drew in small strokes and also don’t be afraid to get in between your lashes really close to the lash line. Apply more mascara after.
