Your Tuesday Truce: 8 Healthy Snacks on the Go

You know the story – you’re running from one place to the next and suddenly you’re STARVING. Maybe you’re on a plane, in your car, or trying to make it to the next spot on time. There’s no way you’ve got time to plan out the perfect kale salad or whip up a satisfying smoothie. Fear not. Eating healthy on the go doesn’t have to be a challenge. It may be tempting to grab some quick fix sugary snacks when you’re in a hurry, but trust us; there are way better options. Like most things, it just requires a little extra planning. Here are some healthy, and more importantly delicious, snack ideas for the next time your stomach’s rumbling:

  1. Kale Chips. Crunchy, a little salty, and bursting with good for you nutrients, kale chips are the new potato chip. Now available in most grocery stores, and in a variety of flavors, these make for a great afternoon snack. They are also super easy to make ahead of time! Here’s one of our favorite recipes.
  2. Almond butter squeeze packs. Almond butter is full of essential vitamins, healthy fats, filling fiber, and is a great source of natural protein. These convenient packs pair well with an apple or banana, but we’d be lying if we said we didn’t eat them straight up. Perfect pick me up.
  3. Hummus. Hummus is one of our all time favorite foods. Low in calories, high in protein, eating hummus has also shown to lower cholesterol and help with weight management. Pair with fresh raw veggies like carrots or celery to keep it extra healthy. We like to make it fresh and throw it in some Tupperware to take on the go, but many places offer pre-portioned packages as well. Just check out the ingredients to make sure there are no hidden extra sugars or preservatives. If you’re making it at home, this is a tasty recipe to start with.
  4. Green juice. Drinking your veggies is the fastest way to get the most amount of nutrients into your system. Good for digestion, energy, and immunity, green juices are an awesome on the go breakfast or midday snack. Look for juices made fresh that day, and organic when possible.
  5. Trail Mix. This is an old stand by, and the best part is, you can make it whatever you’d like. Traditionally composed of raw nuts, seeds, and dried fruits, trail mix is a reliable source of protein and antioxidants. If you’re going store bought, try to stay away from options with a ton of dried fruit or other sugars like chocolate and/or yogurt covered nuts. Making it at home is really the way to go; it lasts forever and you can always have it on hand. This is a really cool guide to making the most amazing mix ever!
  6. Fresh fruits & veggies. This one may seem like a no brainer, but they really are the perfect snack. Sometimes pre-cutting and putting in clear plastic bags or containers makes you more likely to remember to bring them with you. Adding lime juice on top of your fruit or a dash of cayenne to your vegetables helps to keep things interesting.
  7. Snack boxes. In a snack rut? There are some cool companies changing things up. Vegan Cuts, Nature Box, and Healthy Surprise all offer monthly deliveries, with new and inventive snacks in each box. It’s an interesting and convenient way to try new things.
  8. Water. Ok this one is kind of cheating BUT the more hydrated you are throughout the day, the less likely you’ll be reaching for those pretzels. Carrying a reusable water bottle is a good reminder to drink up!
