Ever wonder why you feel groggy after exercising? It’s because your body uses stored energy (also known as glycogen) to power through the workout, leaving your muscles depleted. That’s where my favorite part comes in… choosing the right post workout meal!
Protein and carbs are the key! Yup you read that right, carbs are good for you! Combined with a lean protein, they can help to replenish your body’s levels of glycogen. In the process, you’ll be rebuilding those damaged muscles and maximizing the effect of your workout.
Smoothies and shakes are my go-to following an intense workout. Not only is it the ultimate on-the-go meal, but it also allows me to mix and match some of my favorite foods. The possibilities are endless!
Here’s a recipe that I recently tried at home inspired by the banana nut shake from One Lucky Duck in NYC (a personal favorite of mine).
- 1 banana, sliced and frozen
- 1 cup cashew milk or almond milk
- 1/2 tablespoon ground cinnamon
- 1 tablespoon honey
- 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla extract
- Combine ingredients in blender and blend until smooth
- Pour yourself a glass and ENJOY!
