Your Tuesday Truce: Healthy Cookbooks for the Fall

Crazy, Sexy, Diet by Kris Carr

Carr is a badass. At 31, after being diagnosed with a rare form of slow growing cancer, she decided to take her health into her own hands and completely change her way of life. She went back to school to study nutrition and swapped her big city late nights for small town healthy choices. Seven years later her cancer is stable. She translated all of her new knowledge into this book – a one-stop shop guide for healthy living. She focuses on a gluten-free, vegan diet for optimum energy and overall wellness. Food, juice, supplements, and self-care are all covered. A 21-Day “Adventure Cleanse” is also included, complete with meal plans and recipes. Reading this is like talking to your best friend – Carr breaks down otherwise complicated subjects into easy to read sections. She also offers easy to implement suggestions and tips. If you’re looking for one book to cover a wide range of health & wellness topics, and looking to start making some lifestyle changes, we would definitely recommend starting here.

Feast – Generous Vegetarian Meals For Any Eater And Every Appetite by Sarah Copeland
Feast is one of those cookbooks that you can’t wait to dive into. All the pictures are absolutely gorgeous; it’s a treat just to flip through the pages. But what we love most about this book is that the meals satisfy everyone, vegetarian or not. Vegetarians often get a bad rap for eating “bird food” – just cook those critics a meal from Feast to prove them wrong. Cheese grits with black beans and avocado, vegetable paella, zucchini quesadillas, artichoke enchiladas – YUM. Breakfast, salads, and desserts are also included. Great prep tips and essential tools for the vegetarian kitchen are an added bonus. If you’re vegetarian or looking to incorporate more meatless meals into your diet, this book is perfect for you.

Vegetarian Dinner Parties – 150 Meatless Meals Good Enough To Serve To Company by Bruce Weinstein & Mark Scarbrough
We’re in love with this book. Sometimes it seems easier to just Google “dinner party menu” than search through a cookbook for the right recipes, but this one does all of the hard work for you. Organized by course, each recipe is accompanied by a full suggested menu including small plates, soups, salads, entrees and desserts (and the page number for each of the suggested items). It’s kind of like an edible choose your own adventure! There are also some super helpful tips on which components can be done ahead, as well as recommended wine pairings. If you’ve been waiting for an excuse to throw a dinner party, this book is it.

I am Grateful – Recipes & Lifestyle of Café Gratitude
With locations across California, Café Gratitude is hands down one of our favorite restaurants in the country. This book lets us pretend we’re eating in sunny Los Angeles while we’re really in the middle of a Minnesota blizzard. The recipes focus on organic foods and are all 100% vegan. Soups, entrees, juices, smoothies, and breakfasts are all included. We especially love their dressings and sauces, which help to make any salad more delicious. All recipes are prefaced with “I am” – I am Flourishing, I am Impeccable, I am Graceful to name a few – positive reinforcements so you’ll feel amazing while cooking and while eating.

Thug Kitchen
Tired of taking healthy cooking SO seriously? This book’s for you. With a true commitment to wholesome eating, this vegan & vegetarian friendly book (based on the popular website) makes caring about what you’re putting into your body fun again. But more importantly, the recipes are bomb. With “munchies” like roasted chickpea & broccoli burritos and tempeh peanut noodles, these guys are thinking outside of the box and the results are delectable.
